Refugees - Brian Bilston

I creatively produced an illustrative book design for Brian Bilston’s poem ‘Refugees’, enabling the poem to be read forwards and backward, changing the meaning of the narrative.

The book aims to reflect the changing narrative of Bilston’s poem.

It begins by portraying the negative perception of refugees with two
opposing groups of characters: residents in the dystopian city, and migrants.

Once the poems first narrative has ended the reader reaches the middle of the book where they are told ‘the world can be looked at another way’. The book is then flipped to follow the positive message of rejecting discrimination and welcoming refugees.

The act of turning the book symbolises the reader changing their preconceived perceptions.
